Most people know Mr. Brian Simon for the colorful squares representing class values that
decorate his classroom, but few know their backstory. We had the privilege of interviewing Mr.
Simon and learning all about the squares among other topics.
When asked about his favorite square, Mr. Simon told us, “If forced to choose, I would
pick the purple square because I believe collaboration elevates and enhances the educational
experience. Students working together (except during a quiz or test, of course!) is incredibly
valuable.” While some students may not love that teamwork ends during quizzes and tests, Mr.
Simon firmly believes collaboration is key to learning.
We also wanted to know what inspired the squares. “The squares reinforce to students
that it is okay to make mistakes as long as we try our best,” he explained. “In their own way,
each of the colorful squares in our classroom was designed to create a more positive and
supportive classroom environment that reduces anxiety and builds student confidence.”
After discussing the impact of the squares, we were curious about Mr. Simon’s own
school experiences. “Among the general studies subjects, history and math were my favorites,”
he says. “Both subjects share several similarities in how they develop and enhance critical
thinking and problem-solving skills.” We expected that history would be among his favorites, but
math caught us by surprise.
Mr. Simon shared with us that he has worked at YULA for 21 years! His wife and all four
of his children attended YULA as well.
Of course, we had to ask what his favorite phrase was. He’s known throughout YULA for
several humorous catchphrases, but we were interested to learn that his favorite is referring to
assessments as “celebrations of knowledge.” “While the word ‘quiz’ or ‘test’ may cause student
anxiety, the word ‘celebration’ can make a student feel excited to share their knowledge and
understanding of the course material,” he clarified.
We ended our interview by asking about the most rewarding part of being a teacher.
“Working with students to develop their confidence as critical thinkers and writers, and to help
them achieve their academic goals,” he answered. “Knowing that you have positively influenced
a student’s life is tremendously rewarding.”
From colorful squares to celebrations of knowledge, Mr. Simon’s passion for education is
clear. His students may not always love tests and quizzes, but they’ll always remember his
interesting lessons and funny slogans.
