YULA Girls’ Division Looks Forward to “Hamilton”

Ilana Pollak (‘22)

In August 2015, Hamilton, a production featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, debuted on Broadway. The musical portrays Hamilton, an immigrant who rises up to be a Founding Father in colonial America, as a resilient individual, determined to fight for the colonies’ independence and the birth of a new nation. Hamilton, the most popular show on Broadway, will soon resume showings in New York and Los Angeles.

The YULA Girls’ Division also eagerly looks forward to performing Hamilton this December after months of diligence and preparation. Margy Horowitz, YULA Girls’ Division Performing Arts Director, has cast twenty-five talented students who will take on this challenging and exciting performance. As in previous years, there will be three different showings, December 16th, 18th, and 19th, in order to provide space and convenience for the entire community to watch this thrilling musical.

After auditions, Ruby Krassenstein (‘22) was selected to star as Alexander Hamilton. She has also participated in previous YULA productions like Little Shop of Horrors and the Putnam County Spelling Bee. Ruby says that she is “excited that the cast is made up of a lot of seniors.” Ten of her fellow classmates will be joining her on stage. However, this performance would not possible without the costume designers, backstage volunteers, and drama heads that fulfill vital roles to produce this show, which comprises over 40 songs. Despite the challenge of undertaking a famous Broadway sensation and filling the seemingly daunting lead role, Krassenstein passionately declares she and the cast “can go on tomorrow and still excel” with hard work and determination.
